FAQs

Can anyone train Jiu-Jitsu?

Yes, Jiu Jitsu is a martial art based on using leverage which allows a weaker person to defend themselves against a stronger and heavier opponent.

Will Jiu Jitsu help me get back into shape?

AbsolutelyTraining Jiu Jitsu will help improve your physical condition in a fun and dynamic way. Performing the techniques requires you to use your entire body. You will gain flexibility and strength, and burn enough calories from just the warm-ups alone!

What are the risks of injury in Jiu Jitsu?

Safety is imperative at our academy, however, like with any contact sport, accidents can happen. Jiu Jitsu injuries are usually self inflicted, due to the individual performing a technique incorrectly, but our instructors are always paying close attention. Keep in mind that with each repetition the risk of injury declines, making Jiu Jitsu an extremely safe sport.

What is a typical Jiu Jitsu class like?

The class begins with a warmup, which also serves as physical conditioning, varying from stretching, strength training, explosion, etc. After warming up, we dive into technical training, with repetitions of self-defense, control positions, joint locks and choke movements, just to name a few of the techniques taught. The beginner's class will wrap up with a drill that has technique sequences to stimulate real combat. Intermediate and advanced classes include "rolling" or sparring.

Will I be sparring/ "rolling" on the first day?

No you will not roll on the first day. You will begin your training in the fundamentals/ beginner class. When you are ready you will start rolling in the intermediate/advanced classes.

What to expect on the first day of training?

The first day of training will be an introduction lesson. In this lesson you will learn the principles of Jiu Jitsu and how you can apply them to self defense situations. We will also give you a school tour and answer any questions you may have. You will not need a special uniform (gi/kimono) for the first class. Just comfortable athletic pants and T shirt.
